Double Delight For Kidson With Ginetta Racing Drivers Club Victories

Michael Kidson enjoyed a weekend he will never forget at Silverstone as he secured his first two victories in car-racing during the latest rounds of the Ginetta Racing Drivers Club at the ‘Home of British Motor Racing’ (08/09 June).

The second meeting of the season saw the class of 2019 take on one of the most famous circuits in the world, with the 3.66 mile Grand Prix layout providing an exciting challenge for the rookie drivers as they shared a grid with the competitors from the Ginetta G40 Cup.

Michael Kidson produced a scintillating display in tricky damp conditions in qualifying to secure his first pole position in the series by a margin of 1.7 seconds. His closest challenger was Mark Sansom, with Craig Cornick, Toby Trice and Chris White completing the top five.

Kidson proved to be pretty unstoppable in the opening race as well. Storming clear in the early laps to build a ten second advantage at one stage, the current want2race scholarship winner went on to control proceedings through to the chequered flag for his maiden victory.

There was some thrilling battles behind however as a number of drivers fought over the podium positions. The early mover was Harry Mangion, who climbed from ninth on the grid to third on the opening lap to slot in behind Trice, with Sansom and Chris Threadgill in hot pursuit.

Sansom, who took the first two wins of the campaign at Snetterton three weeks prior, posted the fastest lap of the race as he fought his way through to second place by the end. Cornick joined him on the podium meanwhile after battling back from ninth at the end of the opening lap to third.

Mangion and Trice had to settle for fourth and fifth respectively, both their best results of the season so far. Harry Ormerod rounded out the top six ahead of White, while behind both Mark Lee and Ignazio Zanon enjoyed their first top ten finishes of the campaign.

The second race of the weekend on Sunday evening proved to be another dream race for Kidson. Leading into an early safety car period, he successfully negotiated the restart and led the final three laps to the chequered flag to complete his double success for the weekend.

Cornick ran second through the safety car period ahead of the fast starting Chris Threadgill, however after the action resumed an impressive run from Sansom saw him pick off both drivers to make it four consecutive top two finishes for the season.

Threadgill completed the podium for the third time this year, while Ormerod took his best result of the campaign so far in fourth. Trice completed a fifth place double for the weekend, while White rounded out the top six ahead of Mangion and Cornick.

Zanon and Lee completed the top ten ahead of Paulo Scripo and Nigel Fox, the latter bouncing back strongly from a race one retirement. Mark Allin and Neil Wallace suffered tough weekends meanwhile and will be determined to come back stronger next time out.

We’ve now reached the halfway mark of the 2019 Ginetta Racing Drivers Club season. In a fortnight they head to Donington Park in Leicestershire (22/23 June), before the season finale six weeks later at Brands Hatch in Kent (03/04 August).
