Preview: Ginetta GT5 Challenge, Round One, Oulton Park

The Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge has become renowned for producing some of the most competitive and thrilling one make racing in the UK, and the class of 2020 features a wealth of talent sure to serve up more of the same.

The highest placed returning driver from 2019 is exciting young talent Josh Malin (Richardson Racing). A great first season in the championship last year yielded six podium finishes and fifth in the final standings. He returns to the grid with a title challenge in his sights.

Looking to challenge him for overall glory will be James Taylor (Elite Motorsport), who steps up to the GT5 Challenge following a successful spell in Ginetta Juniors. The 2018 Scholarship winner was a regular podium finisher in the series and won last year’s Winter Series title.

Xentek Motorsport took the GT5 crown last year with Scott McKenna and are back to defend their title with a three-pronged attack. Jonny Wilkinson and Conner Garlick join the grid with previous experience in Ginetta Juniors, while Jesse Chamberlain completed a partial GT5 campaign in 2019.

David Ellesley put in some fantastic drives last season and will be one to watch this year at Race Car Consultants alongside teenage talent Magnus Kriklywi. Ashley Marshall (Fox Motorsport) is an experienced GT5 Challenge racer meanwhile and took a podium finish in 2018.

Charlie Budd (Privateer) and his brother Daniel Budd (Elite Motorsport) both have the potential to challenge for front-running results this year, while it’ll be exciting to watch the progress made by car-racing debutants John Bennett (Elite Motorsport) and Rory McKean (SVG Motorsport).

The Am class contingent is headed by a familiar face in Ginetta paddocks, Phil McGarty (Privateer). Entering his sixth consecutive season of one-make Ginetta competition, he will be aiming to build on his run of seven class podium finishes in the final nine races last year.

Also returning from the 2019 grid is Bal Sidhu (Simon Green Motorsport) for his second season in the series. Ian Duggan is making the step up from the G40 Cup with Fox Motorsport, while Karim Sekkat (Elite Motorsport) and Richard Tetlow (Privateer) make a welcome return to G40 racing.
