Preview: Ginetta G40 Cup, Round Two, Snetterton

After a triple victory in the season opener, Alistair Barclay is the man to beat as the Ginetta G40 Cup heads to Snetterton for Rounds Four, Five and Six this weekend.

Barclay (SVG Motorsport) was in unstoppable form back at Oulton Park over Easter weekend. Kicking off his second year in the series in style, he led every racing lap as he converted a pair of pole positions into the wins and will be determined to enjoy more success this weekend.

Leading the challenge to stop him will be the three drivers who joined him on the overall podium across the season opener; Daniel Morris (Quattro Motorsport), Chris Salkeld (Assetto Motorsport) and Rob Keogh (W2R Motorsport).

A top three hat-trick for Morris means he has an impressive record of five podium finishes in his first six races in the G40 Cup, while fellow Ginetta Racing Driver Club graduate Salkeld joins him in taking silverware in both of his first two appearances in the series.

2015 champion Keogh meanwhile now has 44 podium finishes in the championship and will be aiming to add to his tally this weekend, while other top three contenders come in the shape of his W2R Motorsport team-mates Jimmy Thomson and Roy Alderslade.

Thomson took his maiden G40 Cup podium at Snetterton last year and kicked off the 2019 campaign with a trio of top six finishes, while Alderslade secured a best finish of fourth overall at Oulton Park on his way to a pair of Chairman’s Cup victories.

That class, which caters for drivers over the age of 45, was hotly contested on the opening weekend. Julian Wantling (Assetto Motorsport) picked up the other win, while his team-mates Martin Wills and Mike West, plus Ian Duggan (Fox Motorsport) also got onto the class podium.

A competitive entry for 2019 also features the experienced Shawn Fleming (SF Racing), who ended as the vice-champion three years ago, a regular top six finisher from last season in Bill Forbes (Quattro Motorsport) and quick GRDC graduate Robin Grimwood (Assetto Motorsport).

With 18 identical Ginetta G40’s set to battle it out, the action is sure to be close-fought throughout the field this weekend and amongst those looking to make an impression will be SF Racing pair Gary Wager and John Wall, Lee Goldsmith (Assetto Motorsport), Charlotte Birch (SVG Motorsport) and debutant Daniel Smith (Privateer).
