Golding Stars With Brands Hatch G40 Cup Hat-Trick

Tom Golding produced a scintillating display to record a dominant triple victory in the Ginetta G40 Cup around the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit (29/30 August).

Golding headed into the event as the driver in form following a double victory last time out at Donington Park, and he made a statement of intent in qualifying on Saturday morning by topping the timesheets by a huge margin of 1.3 seconds.

His closest competition came in the form of Owen Hizzey (SVG Motorsport) and regular 2020 sparring partner Giles Dawson (Assetto Motorsport). In the Chairmans Cup meanwhile, Julian Wantling (Assetto Motorsport) marked his return to the series with the class pole position.

After the first attempt was red flagged due to an incident, Saturday’s opening race took place over a shortened ten minute duration. That was still more than enough time for Golding to put in a sensational display at the front of the pack though.

Over the course of six racing laps, the 2018 series champion stormed clear to an incredible winning margin of over 20 seconds. That was aided somewhat by a race long battle for second place, in which Chris White (Raceway Motorsport) found himself under constant pressure from a train of cars.

Despite the best efforts of his pursuers, White was able to hold on for his best result in the championship so far. Hizzey completed the podium after edging out Mark Sansom (Assetto Motorsport) in a close battle to the flag, while Ignazio Zanon (Raceway Motorsport) was fifth.

Completing the top six and recorded his second career Chairmans Cup win was Wantling. Mark Lee (SVG Motorsport) had been on the class pole at the restart after moving into the lead prior to the red flag stoppage, but Wantling got past him around mid-distance to take the victory.

Splitting them in the final result was Paulo Scripo (Raceway Motorsport) and Dawson, who dropped back from the podium battle late on. Rounding out the top ten with his first Chairmans Cup podium of the season was Gary Wager (SF Racing).

Race two on Sunday morning was another to be halted early on by a red flag. Prior to the stoppage, there had been time for a close battle for third ending in contact, with Sansom and White both dropping down the order and Dawson’s race coming to a premature end.

When the race restarted, Golding and Hizzey led the field away, as behind a fast starting Scripo rose from sixth on the grid to third by the end of the opening lap. That was all the racing that took place though, as the safety car appeared on track and the remainder of the race took place under yellows.

Golding therefore picked up the victory ahead of Hizzey and Scripo, the latter picking up a maiden podium finish. Wantling, Wager and Lee stepped onto the Chairmans Cup podium meanwhile, with Shawn Fleming (SF Racing) and Neil Wallace (SVG Motorsport) just missing out.

Fortunately there were no stoppages in the final race of the weekend, with Golding taking full advantage to once again disappear into the distance at the front of the pack. He recorded his sixth win of the season by no less than 21 seconds.

Hizzey ran second throughout to complete his top three hat-trick for the weekend and make it six consecutive podium finishes for the series debutant. He narrowly edged out Dawson at the finish, who produced a brilliant drive to climb from the 12th on the grid to the podium.

Zanon came home fourth, while Wantling completed a dream return to the series with a third Chairmans Cup success in fifth overall. Wager and Lee joined him in taking a hat-trick of class podium finishes for the weekend in second and third respectively.

Two meetings remain in the 2020 Ginetta G40 Cup season, with a visit to Donington Park (19/20 September) followed by the season finale at Snetterton (3/4 October).
