William Antrobus couldn’t be beaten in the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT Championship on the opening day at Croft (27 June), with a dominant double victory strengthening his title challenge.
For a second consecutive event, Antrobus (Elite Motorsport) set a rapid pace in qualifying to secure a double pole position. He edged out Cameron Pratt Thompson (SVG Motorsport), the PRO class championship leader coming into the event, by almost two tenths of a second.
Harry Gamble (Elite Motorsport) wasn’t far behind in third, while Alex Duncan (Xentek Motorsport) secured his first-ever AM class pole in fourth overall. E3 Sport team-mates James Nicholas and Jamie Caudle completed the AM top three, in fifth and seventh overall respectively.
As Antrobus converted pole position into the lead heading through Clervaux for the first time, Gamble made an immediate move on Pratt Thompson to grab second. Duncan lost ground behind meanwhile, a trip over the gravel dropping him from fourth to seventh on lap one.
Pratt Thompson dropped another position on lap two, with a wide moment exiting Clervaux allowing new AM class leader Nicholas through. Those two remained close together for a number of laps, before Pratt Thompson fought back into the hairpin on lap six to regain third.
Ahead, Antrobus was edging clear at the front and ended up winning by almost four seconds. Gamble soaked up late pressure from Pratt Thompson to make it an Elite Motorsport one-two, while Nicholas wrapped up the AM class victory in fourth overall ahead of Louis Darling (Orion SPR).
Recovering from his first lap moment, Duncan fought back past his AM class rival Caudle on lap five to secure second in class. As Caudle completed the podium, Lucie Hodgson (Orion SPR) finished up fourth while Elliot Foster (MDD Motorsport) unfortunately failed to reach the finish.
It once again proved to be an action-packed start to proceedings as the field headed through Clervaux for the first time. A quick launch from Gamble saw him shoot from fourth on the grid to a challenge for the lead at turn one, however he ended up wide over the gravel.
Antrobus maintained his lead therefore, as Duncan worked his way past Pratt Thompson for second overall. That kicked off a duel between the two, with Pratt Thompson putting him under a lot of pressure before diving past into the final hairpin on lap nine.
He couldn’t do anything about Antrobus though, who secured his fourth win of the season so far. Pratt Thompson retained his championship lead with second, as Duncan matched his best overall finish of the season in third to earn the AM class victory.
Gamble had to settle for fourth in the end, with Nicholas and Darling close behind at the chequered flag. Caudle completed the AM podium alongside Duncan and Nicholas, as fellow class contenders Foster and Hodgson completed the race finishers.
