Dawson (Assetto Motorsport) is the early championship leader following three action-packed races at Oulton Park two weeks’ ago. The experienced Ginetta racer picked up the opening pole position of the season, which he followed up with a race win and two second place finishes.
Golding meanwhile is a former champion in the series and returned to the grid on top form in Cheshire. With series debutants CTS Motorsport, he picked up the first two victories of the campaign before impressively fighting through from the back of the grid to second in the final race.
Both drivers will be determined to build on their 100% podium records to date, but will have their work cut out against a talented entry of drivers that includes four graduates from the Ginetta Racing Drivers Club and Ginetta newcomer Owen Hizzey (SVG Motorsport).
The former GRDC contingent is led in the points standings by Italian student Ignazio Zanon (Raceway Motorsport), who took a pair of class podium finishes at Oulton Park. The other top three result went to his team-mate Chris White.
Fellow Raceway driver Paolo Scripo was fourth in class on two occasions and will be targeting a first piece of silverware this weekend, while Mark Sansom (Assetto Motorsport) was a double race-winner in GRDC last year and is likely to be in the podium battle as well.
The G40 Cup also features a Chairmans Cup for drivers aged 45 and over. While they battle for their own trophies and points, the class competitors regularly join the battle at the front of the overall field. Doing exactly that on the opening weekend was Mike West.
The Assetto Motorsport ace kicked off his second season in the series with a supreme hat-trick of Chairmans Cup wins and impressively finished third overall on two occasions. Hot on his heels throughout was team-mate Robin Grimwood, who scored a trio of second place class finishes.
A familiar face returns to the grid to challenge them this weekend, with reigning Chairmans Cup champion Roy Alderslade back in action with Raceway Motorsport. He’ll be joining a competitive class that features three other drivers who graced the podium last time out.
2019 GRDC competitors Neil Wallace and Mark Lee each started the season with a welcome piece of class silverware, while experienced G40 Cup driver Shawn Fleming (SF Racing) added to his large haul of trophies from the series. Team-mate Gary Wager is also a firm podium contender.
