Freddie Slater is beginning to rewrite the Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship record books as the second half of the 2023 season kicks off this weekend at Snetterton (17/18 June).
He’s had a simply phenomenal run of 11 victories from 15 races so far for Slater (R Racing). Even with four events still to run, he’s already equalled the all-time championship record for the most wins in a single season. That places him alongside former champions Seb Morris and Harry Woodhead.
Slater’s incredible consistency and dominance at the front of the field is further proven by the fact he’s led at least one lap in every race this year. One of his standout performances came during the G Fest event at Silverstone earlier this month. He went from 12th on the grid to the lead in less than three laps.
Leading the challenge to Slater at present, albeit over 120 points adrift in the championship standings, is Hugo Schwarze (Elite Motorsport). The German rookie has been a revelation in his maiden car-racing campaign. A win at Donington Park is just one of nine overall podium finishes so far.
2023 Ginetta Junior scholar Chase Fernandez (Assetto Racing) had a breakthrough weekend at G Fest. Last time out, he scored his first two race wins. Team-mate Finn Harrison came close to victory too. He produced arguably the drive of the season so far from 20th on the grid to second.
A host of drivers have shown they have the speed and skill to win races this season. That group includes Mikey Porter and Luca Hopkinson, who joined Slater in a memorable first one-two-three finish for reigning champions R Racing at G Fest. They now have more than 50 Junior race wins as a team.
Former champions Elite Motorsport are unlucky to have only won one race so far. Both Alisha Palmowski and Charlie Hart have hit misfortune whilst battling at the front of the field. Palmowski in particular is a clear race win contender having finished second on three occasions to date.
Mckenzie Douglass (Fox Motorsport) and Reza Seewooruthun (R Racing) have also picked up overall silverware this year. Aiming for podium breakthroughs this weekend will be Preptech UK pair Tom Spragg and Henry Joslyn. Both have featured in the top six battles recently. Edu Robinson (R Racing) and Freddie Allum (Elite Motorsport) will be aiming to join their successful team-mates at the front of the field.
Felix Livesey (Xentek Motorsport) and Brea Angliss (Breakell Racing) have their eyes set on improving their best ever results. Fox Motorsport team-mates Harry Moss and Holly Miall target their maiden top ten results.
