Rydman Grows Swedish Ginetta GT5 Challenge Advantage

2nd August 2022 • Simon Paice

Hampus Rydman has increased his Swedish Ginetta GT5 Challenge championship lead to 56 points after scoring two more wins at the Kinnekulle Ring this past weekend (30/31 July).

Reigning champion Rydman headed into the fourth meeting of the season already with four wins from the opening six races to his name - a double success in the Anderstorp opener followed by single wins at Ljungbyhed Park and Falkenberg.

It was Peter Wiborg, himself a race-winner last time out at Falkenberg, who set the pace in qualifying on Saturday however. Rydman was only 0.023s adrift in second ahead of the two Kristiansson’s; Alexzander and Niklas.

Wiborg led the first half of the opening race before Rydman got ahead. As he went on to win by three seconds, Wiborg dropped back to fourth with tyre problems. That opened the door for Alexzander Kristiansson and Kevin Bloomberg to finish on the podium, the latter from sixth on the grid.

Ljungbyhed race-winner Jesper Ramsberg was fifth on the road, however he received a penalty following an incident with Niklas Kristiansson, so Andreas Lundin inherited the place. Despite the spin, Kristiansson still won the Senior class from Ola Gustafsson and Anders Hedensjö.

Rydman went on to dominate race two, leading from start to finish for a seven second winning margin. There was more action behind though, with Ramsberg battling through from fifth on the grid to second place.

Wiborg, Blomberg and Alexzander Kristiansson battled it out for the final podium place. Blomberg held the spot for a while, but a trip across the rallycross track dropped him to fifth and opened the door for Kristiansson to complete a podium. Niklas Kristiansson meanwhile won the Seniors again from Hedensjö and Gustafsson.

Rydman’s success means his points lead is now equivalent to more than two race wins, heading into the penultimate weekend of the season at Anderstorp on 10/11 September.
