Sykes competed in Ginetta championships on and off for seven years, a journey that started in the G20 Challenge back in 2006. He followed that up with spells in the G50 Cup and GT5 Challenge.
The Yorkshireman also got behind the wheel of Ginetta’s for two campaigns in the British GT Championship. He shared a G50 GT4 with Ginetta chairman Lawrence Tomlinson in 2009, and then four years later raced a G55 GT3 alongside Mike Simpson.
Sykes’ move into the GT Academy means he will have raced five different models of Ginetta in total; the G20, G40, G50, G55 and G56. He will compete this season with want2race in the GTA class.
Richard Sykes: “I love racing and after having a bit of a break, Lawrence [Tomlinson] has tempted me back. The GT Academy is a great series for me to ease myself back in, with the beautiful G56 being one of the best all round cars I’ve ever driven. I’m looking forward to racing against such a cross section of drivers, with a good mix of young and old, experienced and rookies.”
The Ginetta GT Academy gives drivers of all experience levels the opportunity to enjoy entry level GT racing. The series offers an uncompromising package of high performance racing at an affordable cost, with the exposure of competing at British GT and BTCC events.
