R Racing Return To Defend Ginetta Junior Titles

R Racing will be defending their Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship titles this season with a capacity six car entry.

R Racing Return To Defend Ginetta Junior Titles

The Norfolk based team won their first overall drivers’ crown last year with Aston Millar as part of a clean sweep of the 2021 titles, having also enjoyed success in the teams’ contest and the Winter Series with Josh Rowledge.

Rowledge (16, Dorset) will remain with the team this season as he targets overall glory. In his debut campaign last year, he recorded a great tally of 17 rookie class podium finishes and an overall pole position at Oulton Park, before scoring two race wins en-route to the Winter title.

Joining him in returning for a second Ginetta Junior season will be Ian Aguilera (14, Mexico). Showcasing his impressive raw pace by qualifying in the overall top six on three occasions, he went on to secure a best overall race result so far of fourth in the Winter Series.

Sonny Smith (14, Hampshire) and Luke Watts (15, Yorkshire) are set to tackle their first full Junior campaigns after contesting selected rounds and the Winter Series last year. Smith was the top rookie in the Winter Series, while Watts secured a best result of 12th in the main series.

Luca Hopkinson (15, USA) made his racing debut in the Winter Series meanwhile, with a strong start seeing him take a highest finish of 15th, whilst completing the team’s line-up is Akshay Bohra (15, Singapore). A former champion in German and Asian karting, he will be making his car-racing debut.

Jamie Ross, R Racing Team Principal: “2021 was great for the team, we couldn’t have wished for much more, so obviously our aim is to carry the momentum into 2022. We have a solid winter testing programme in place to try and maximise our six drivers.

“Working with Phil Glew and Ash Sutton I am fairly confident we can have another strong season. We have some new exciting faces in the team and it will be great to see how they fair against our second year drivers.”

The Ginetta Junior Championship is the UK’s longest running and most prestigious Junior series, offering the first step on the motorsport ladder for 14-17 year old racing drivers as they compete on the support bill for the British Touring Car Championship.
