Preview: Ginetta G40 Cup, Round Four, Zandvoort

Zandvoort awaits as we head into the second half of the 2019 Ginetta G40 Cup season with the championship’s annual overseas meeting this weekend (06/07 July).

Four drivers from four different teams are in the mix at the top of the championship standings and with only 43 points splitting them, the title battle is heating up ahead of the trip across the North Sea to Holland for the series’ first visit since 2017.

Since taking a triple victory in the season opener at Oulton Park, it’s been Alistair Barclay (SVG Motorsport) who has held the position of championship leader, with a further win at Snetterton and a couple more podium finishes strengthening his position at the top.

Rob Keogh (W2R Motorsport) is the driver in form though with five consecutive podium finishes under his belt, including wins in each of the last two weekends at Snetterton and Silverstone. He heads to Zandvoort with history at the circuit too, having won there two years ago.

With confidence high from a standout triple Am Class victory on his Ginetta GT5 Challenge debut recently, Daniel Morris (Quattro Motorsport) returns to G40 Cup action hoping to replicate the form that saw him take five podium finishes in the opening six races of the year.

Fourth in the points and ready to fight for the top three is Chris Salkeld (Assetto Motorsport). The Ginetta Racing Drivers Club graduate enjoyed his best weekend of the season so far at Silverstone with a maiden victory and a second place finish.

Jimmy Thomson (W2R Motorsport) is a threat for the podium as he looks to add to his one top three result to date this year, while his team-mate Roy Alderslade is one of a number of the Chairmans Cup class entrants that have fought at the front of the field.

Alongside four outright top six finishes, Alderslade has built a healthy lead atop the Chairmans Cup standings courtesy of five victories so far. There is a competitive class entry though, with a number of other drivers having shown they are capable of taking wins.

Martin Wills (Assetto Motorsport) won at Snetterton and produced a sensational display at Silverstone to qualify on pole position outright, while his team-mate Julian Wantling and Ian Duggan (Fox Motorsport) have also picked up victories.

SF Racing pair Shawn Fleming and Gary Wager each secured their first class podiums of the season at Silverstone and will benefit from having both previously raced at Zandvoort in the series, while Assetto Motorsport duo Mike West and Robin Grimwood have taken silverware too.

A talented entry for Zandvoort also features regular top ten finishers Daniel Smith (Privateer) and Bill Forbes (Quattro Motorsport), the ever-improving Charlotte Birch (SVG Motorsport) and Chairmans Cup runners John Wall (SF Racing) and Lee Goldsmith (Assetto Motorsport).
