Preview: 2021 Ginetta Junior Championship – Brands Hatch Indy

Five races in and the 2021 Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship is as close-fought, entertaining and unpredictable as ever heading into this weekend’s action at Brands Hatch.

Preview: 2021 Ginetta Junior Championship – Brands Hatch Indy

Going to Kent as the championship leader is Tom Edgar (R Racing), who has excelled across the opening events at Thruxton and Snetterton. The Northern Irishman has combined speed and consistency, with a race win on each weekend as part of a run of top six finishes in every contest so far.

The points leader after the Thruxton opener was Seb Hopkins (Elite Motorsport), however the double podium finisher lost ground with a tough trip to Snetterton. In stark contrast, two drivers left Norfolk having produced the best weekends’ of their Junior careers to date.

They were Will Jenkins (Elite Motorsport) and Liam McNeilly (Fox Motorsport), who both scored their first overall podium finishes in the series with brilliant hat-tricks. McNeilly also enjoyed the honour of becoming a race-winner for the first time.

A regular sight at the front of the grid this season has been a fleet of R Racing cars battling for honours. Alongside Edgar, rookie sensation Callum Voisin has also scored a win in each of the opening events as he follows in the footsteps of his brother, 2020 title contender Bailey.

Kent local Josh Miller returns to the scene of his maiden series win in the 2020 season finale having joined fellow R Racing talent Aston Millar in scoring a podium finish this year, whilst team-mate Freddie Tomlinson is no stranger to the Junior rostrum either from last season.

Josh Rowledge (Elite Motorsport) is the rookie points leader having scored a class podium in every race so far. Ginetta Junior Scholarship winner Robert de Haan (Richardson Racing) and Max Dodds (Assetto Motorsport) have also impressed with three trophies apiece to date.

Dodds is part of a competitive entry from the Assetto team; Joe Wheeler has shown his race craft with more places gained in the races so far than anyone else, Jamie Osborne scored a maiden top ten finish at Snetterton and Harri Reynolds has been one of the leading rookies on the grid.

Targeting rookie class silverware will be Elite Motorsport’s Max Hall, a points finisher in every race so far, Joe Warhurst, who qualified a brilliant fourth overall at Thruxton. A standout qualifying performance at Snetterton meanwhile came from Ian Aguilera (R Racing) in sixth.

Edward Pearson (Richardson Racing), Jack Sherwood (Elite Motorsport) and Fergus Chalmers (Preptech UK) all stepped forward at Snetterton with their best results of the season so far, while Ginetta Junior scholar Maurice Henry (Fox Motorsport) scored a first trio of points finishes.

Zac Meakin (Raceway Motorsport), James Higgins (Preptech UK), Jacob Hodgkiss (Race Car Consultants), Aqil Alibhai (Breakell Racing) and Adam Brown (Ultimate Speed Racing) have featured in the points as well, whilst Oliver Flashman (Richardson Racing) will be aiming to open his account for the season.
