Preview: 2021 Ginetta Junior Championship – Thruxton

Six points separate Aston Millar and Liam McNeilly at the top of the Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship standings as the second half of an ultra-competitive season starts this weekend at Thruxton.

Preview: 2021 Ginetta Junior Championship – Thruxton

Four different drivers have led the championship at one stage this year, with Millar (R Racing) being the latest incumbent. A brilliant first pair of race wins at Knockhill a fortnight ago moved him to the top, as he continues an impressive record of finishing every race inside the top six.

McNeilly (Fox Motorsport) led the way heading to Scotland and remains hot on Millar’s heels after scoring a third win of the season in the Knockhill opener. Not far behind them in the points is Seb Hopkins (Elite Motorsport), with three Scottish podiums getting him back on track.

Both Millar and Hopkins featured on the podium during the season opener at Thruxton back in May, and one of the race-winners that weekend was Callum Voisin (R Racing). The rookie class leader netted a sixth overall victory at Knockhill to move up to fourth in the points.

Other rookies to impress include Robert de Haan (Richardson Racing) and Josh Rowledge (Elite Motorsport). Ginetta Junior scholar De Haan scored a maiden overall top three at Knockhill, while Rowledge qualified on pole at Oulton Park.

Aiming to bounce back from tough weekends at Knockhill and force their way into the title picture will be Will Jenkins (Elite Motorsport) and Josh Miller (R Racing), who have both picked up a handful of podium finishes across the season so far.

In the competitive midfield pack, Assetto Motorsport have been a formidable force with front-running performances from Max Dodds, Harri Reynolds, Joe Wheeler and Jamie Osborne, while Freddie Tomlinson (R Racing) and Zac Meakin (Raceway Motorsport) have frequently battled in the top ten too.

Ginetta Junior scholar Maurice Henry (Fox Motorsport), Aqil Alibhai (Breakell Racing) and James Higgins (Preptech UK) enjoyed breakthrough top ten results at Knockhill, while Edward Pearson (Richardson Racing), Fergus Chalmers (Preptech UK) and Jack Sherwood (Elite Motorsport) also picked up seasons’ best finishes.

Joe Warhurst (Elite Motorsport) is one to watch after qualifying a great fourth at Thruxton in May. Team-mate Max Hall and Ian Aguilera (R Racing) scored points on the same weekend, while Jacob Hodgkiss (Race Car Consultants), Oliver Flashman (Richardson Racing) and Adam Brown (Ultimate Speed Racing) have enjoyed strong performances in recent events.
