Preview: 2021 Ginetta GT5 Challenge Pro – Thruxton

The 10th anniversary season of the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge kicks off this weekend, with an ultra-competitive Pro class entry set to commence battle around the fastest circuit in the UK, Thruxton.

Preview: 2021 Ginetta GT5 Challenge Pro – Thruxton

The GT5 Challenge is renowned for producing some of the closest and most exhilarating one-make racing in the UK, and an exciting mix of returning drivers and new talents have come together to battle it out at the front of the field this season.

Leading the list of potential title contenders this season are a group of drivers that have enjoyed success in the series in recent years. The highest placed returning driver from 2020 is Magnus Kriklywi (Race Car Consultants), who scored a top five championship finish last year.

John Bennett (Elite Motorsport) has momentum on his side after impressively finishing with three podium finishes in the final four races last year, while Conner Garlick (Xentek Motorsport) scored a top three of his own en-route to a top ten points finish.

Connor Grady (Alastair Rushforth Motorsport) makes a full-time return to the series as a former podium-finisher in both 2018 and 2019, while Josh Steed (Xentek Motorsport) is also back after a season away having shown huge potential through the 2019 campaign.

A number of drivers are moving up the Ginetta ladder to make their GT5 Challenge debuts this season. Amongst those are Owen Hizzey (SVG Motorsport), a race-winner in the G40 Cup last year, and fellow front-runner from that series, Ignazio Zanon (Raceway Motorsport).

Three drivers are making the direct step up from Ginetta Juniors meanwhile; Will Rochford, Haytham Qarajouli (both TCR) and Will Aspin (Elite Motorsport). Nat Hodgkiss (Race Car Consultants) previously competed in the series too in 2019.

New to Ginetta racing this season will be reigning Fiesta Junior vice-champion Will Orton (Alastair Rushforth Motorsport), karting graduate Harley Haughton (Elite Motorsport) and ex-BMW racer Mikey Doble (Xentek Motorsport).

Making an exciting return to Ginetta racing for the first time in seven years meanwhile is Max Coates (Breakell Racing), who is set to become only the 10th driver ever to compete in the Juniors, GT5 Challenge and GT4 SuperCup.
