Breakell Racing Add Ginetta GT5 Challenge Entry

Breakell Racing will be mounting a double attack on Ginetta competition this season after confirming a one-car entry into the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge.

Breakell Racing Add Ginetta GT5 Challenge Entry

The Lancashire squad, who enter Ginetta racing for the first time with previous experience across GT, tin-top and prototype competition, are adding their GT5 Challenge programme to a previously announced entry into the Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship with Aqil Alibhai.

The team is set to welcome a number of different drivers across the season in their GT5 Challenge machine. Racing for them at the Thruxton season opener next weekend is a familiar figure in Ginetta paddocks, former Junior and GT4 SuperCup racer Max Coates (pictured).

The popular Yorkshireman has been working with Breakell Racing as a driver coach to assist their transition into Ginetta racing, and the 27 year old will now make a welcome return to a Ginetta grid himself for the first time in seven years.

Max Coates: “11 years ago I made my car racing debut with Ginetta, at Thruxton, in the Juniors, so it’s fitting I’ll be racing at the same circuit for my return. Truthfully, you never leave the Ginetta family.

“I’ll be racing alongside my coaching duties with Aqil [Alibhai], so it’s doubly exciting for me next weekend. I’d like to extend a thank you to James Breakell, their partners and mine for giving me the chance to race a Ginetta again.”

Another driver returning to Ginetta’s will be Morten Dons. The 2013 GT5 Challenge Sweden champion went on to compete in British GT behind the wheel of a G55 GT4, and then secured a class victory in the 2015 European Le Mans Series in a Ginetta LMP3.

The Danish driver has been a regular in prototype racing ever since and also runs STEP Sports Management in his homeland. One of the young talents he supports, Silas Rytter, will join his compatriot in competing with Breakell Racing this season.

Completing their line-up will be another Ginetta debutant in Sean Peters. The experienced Lancashire based racer previously spent a number of years in MG Car Club racing and has recently competed in the 750 Motor Club Bikesports series in a Breakell-run Radical.

James Breakell, team manager: “We are delighted to be expanding our Ginetta programme for 2021. Our aim as a team is to give talented young drivers a route into protoype racing and Ginetta Juniors and GT5 Challenge provide a fantastic start to that journey.

“We’ve got a great group of drivers set to race for us this season. Max [Coates] has competed in most of the biggest championships in the UK and his experience has been invaluable for us in recent months. I’ve got no doubt he can be right in the mix at the front next weekend.

“Morten [Dons] is another very experienced driver and we’re excited to welcome both him and Silas [Rytter] into our line-up through the season. Sean [Peters] meanwhile has shown great pace in testing with us and will certainly be one to watch when he gets behind the wheel.

“We are looking to make our mark during our debut season in Ginetta racing and establish ourselves as a competitive package with our performances through the year in both the Juniors and GT5 Challenge.”

Packed grids and close racing makes the Ginetta GT5 Challenge a popular entry-level championship for many aspiring GT racers. In 2021, the series will compete across both British GT and British Touring Car Championship weekends, sharing a grid with the G40 Cup.
