Preview: Ginetta G40 Cup, Round One, Oulton Park

After seeing the 2019 title battle decided in dramatic fashion on the final racing lap of the season, the Ginetta G40 Cup is ready to serve up some more nail-biting action this year.

The entry-level championship, a popular step up for graduates of the Ginetta Racing Drivers Club, has launched the careers of a number of talented racers. The latest, 2019 champion Chris Salkeld, is stepping up to the Ginetta GT4 SuperCup this season, while 2017 victor Michael Crees is in the BTCC.

Sandwiching them on the roll call of champions is Tom Golding, who took eight race victories on his way to the 2018 title. Golding is back on the grid this season with series debutants CTS Motorsport and will be looking to make history by becoming the first ever two-time G40 Cup winner.

Hoping to challenge him will be experienced Ginetta racer Giles Dawson (Assetto Motorsport), who made two G40 Cup appearances last season and impressed with a podium at Silverstone. Owen Hizzey (SVG Motorsport) will have high hopes too in his first season of Ginetta racing.

2019 GRDC racers Mark Sansom (Assetto Motorsport), Chris White (Raceway Motorsport) and SVG Motorsport’s Mark Lee and Neil Wallace all made debuts in the G40 Cup at the end of last season and are now exciting additions to the grid full-time.

Sansom led that group in the GRDC with a couple of race wins, though all four acquitted themselves well in the competitive G40 Cup field with Lee and White picking up top ten finishes. They’re joined on the grid by two more GRDC graduates at Raceway Motorsport, Ignazio Zanon and Paulo Scripo.

The G40 Cup also features a Chairmans Cup class for drivers aged 45 and over. It’s been hotly contested in recent years and it looks set to be no different this season with five podium finishers from 2019 returning to battle for the title again.

The most prolific of them last year was Mike West (Assetto Motorsport) who visited the rostrum seven times, and also made a debut in the Ginetta GT4 SuperCup. He’ll be team-mates with fellow class front-runners Julian Wantling and Robin Grimwood.

Shawn Fleming is sure to be in the podium battle once again, having been a front-runner in the G40 Cup since its introduction in 2015. He competes at SF Racing with fellow series regular Gary Wager, while Andrew Marshall (SVG Motorsport) returns to the championship for the first time since 2016.
