Sibley Supreme On Saturday In G40 Cup

22nd September 2018 • Stephen Errity

Xentek’s Tom Sibley won Saturday evening’s Ginetta G40 Cup race at Donington Park – the first of three encounters to wrap up the championship’s season this weekend.

A wet qualifying session earlier in the day had seen Sibley take pole position from SVG Motorspot’s Alistair Barclay. The second row was made up of two G40 Cup debutants stepping up from the GRDC: Quattro Motorsport’s Dan Morris and Assetto Motorsport’s Chris Salkeld.

Salkeld briefly held the lead at the start, but the safety car was called out for a lap after several cars went off at turn one. At the restart, Sibley managed to get the jump on Salkeld and wasn’t caught for the rest of the race.

Oliphant P 01

There was plenty of action further back, as third-place Jack Oliphant (W2R) hit trouble, allowing Morris and Barclay to move up to third and fourth by the end of lap four. That became second and third two laps later as both caught and passed Salkeld, but the latter managed to hold off the challenge of Dimitri Sedashev until the flag.

Behind Sedashev in sixth was Paul Oliphant, taking the Chairman’s Cup for this race, while Bill Forbes was seventh and Jack Oliphant managed to recover to eighth following his earlier drop. Hopkins and Wager in ninth and 10th overall completed the Chairman’s Cup podium.
