Rookie Quartet Ready To Go For 2019 Ginetta Racing Drivers Club

8th March 2019 • Simon Paice

Mark Mandeville, Harry Mangion, Mark Allin and Ignazio Zanon will make their motorsport debuts this year as part of the Ginetta Racing Drivers Club.

The Ginetta Racing Drivers Club (GRDC) is an all-inclusive package designed for drivers who are brand new to the sport, with every driver having the same level of track experience. The GRDC offers trackdays, ARDS tests, a sprint challenge and eight close, competitive races.

After competing in karting as a teenager, 44 year old Mark Mandeville from Buckinghamshire has been itching to get back into competitive race action and says he will be “realising a lifelong ambition” to do so as he enters the GRDC this year.

Mandeville: “I’m really excited to be joining the GRDC and racing on some great British tracks, especially Brands Hatch GP – this was the place I first saw a Formula 1 car in 1986! A few years ago, I realised that you only get one shot at life and to enjoy and make the most of it.

“Starting my own business was the first accomplishment and being on the GRDC grid is the next. If I could make it on to the podium a couple of times I’d be really pleased – that and not writing off the car! Ginetta have made the whole process fun and easy so far and I can’t wait to get started.”

London accountant Harry Mangion will follow in the footsteps of his father Peter, a reigning class champion in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB, as he launches his motorsport career, with the 25 year old having previously got a taste of high-speed circuit thrills with track days at Croft and Silverstone.

Mangion: “Having been in the TOCA paddock last year, it was clear to see Ginetta championships are run well. With the advice of a few former Ginetta drivers, the GRDC looked like a good opportunity to take my first step in racing, without quite the same level of time commitment that is common among other series.

“The opportunity to race on such famous, historic circuits is something I'm looking forward to, the relaxed atmosphere in the paddock is something that attracted me to the series, while the support from Ginetta will be incredibly valuable in getting me started on the racing ladder.

“In terms of expectations, I am trying to be realistic at this stage, having not driven the car yet! The main aim is to keep it on the black stuff and enjoy the racing, but if I could get on the podium at some point during the season, that would be fantastic!”

Mark Allin also joins the grid with track day experience under his belt and after pondering the transition to race competition for a while, the 57 year old consultant from Petersfield in Hampshire is excited to be giving it a go this season with Ginetta.

Allin: “I’ve thought about racing for a while to see if I can push myself a bit harder and have fun. I love Ginetta’s and the GRDC concept, so it seemed the perfect choice. My aim it to work hard, enjoy myself and see where that takes me …. and obviously represent older guys everywhere!”

20 year old racer Ignazio Zanon meanwhile will likely be one of the youngest drivers on the grid this season as he makes his motorsport bow, with the Italian racer set for a busy year as he combines his racing with continued studies in Business and Management at the University of Surrey.

Zanon: “The GRDC for me is a possibility to make my dreams come true, as since I was a little kid all I wanted was to race and to be in a car. My main goal this year is to understand how racing really works and getting to grips with all its aspects. If in the meantime I am able to achieve a podium that would be great."
